Dr. Prasun Sanyal is a Consultant Arthroplasty Surgeon specialising in primary, complex, revision and robotic-assisted hip and knee replacement surgery.
His practice is built around clinical precision, evidence-based decision-making and a patient-centred approach to joint replacement. He believes that every patient requires an individual treatment plan shaped by their condition, anatomy, lifestyle and expectations.
Dr. Sanyal also holds the distinction of being the first surgeon from Eastern India to complete the FNB Arthroplasty post-doctoral superspeciality fellowship.
Dr. Sanyal began his medical education at R.G. Kar Medical College, Kolkata, completing his MBBS from 2005 to 2011.
His undergraduate years were marked by several academic distinctions, including Gold Medals and Class Assistant (CA) in Physiology and Pathology, a Silver Medal in Pharmacology, and multiple other academic distinctions.
He subsequently secured admission to postgraduate training in Orthopaedics at BMC through the AIPGME 2012 examination.
Following completion of his postgraduate training from 2012 to 2015, Dr. Sanyal served as a Senior Resident in the Department of Orthopaedics at R.G. Kar Medical College and later as a faculty member . This period provided extensive exposure to trauma and complex orthopaedic management and helped establish the clinical foundation for his later super-specialisation.
With a growing focus on joint preservation and replacement, Dr. Sanyal pursued advanced sub-specialisation in Arthroplasty.
He cleared the Fellowship Entrance Test (FET) 2020 and was selected for the prestigious FNB Arthroplasty fellowship at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital & Research Centre, Pune.
His training was undertaken under the guidance of renowned Arthroplasty specialists Dr. Hemant Wakankar, Past President of the Indian Society of Hip & Knee Surgeons, and Dr. Mahesh Kulkarni, AO International Faculty for the Asia Pacific region.
The fellowship provided focused experience across:
As part of his specialist fellowship, Dr. Sanyal gained extensive operative experience across primary, robotic-assisted and revision joint replacement.
For Dr. Sanyal, successful joint replacement begins well before the operation.
A patient's symptoms, functional requirements, expectations, anatomy and lifestyle all form part of the decision-making process. Treatment is therefore planned around the individual rather than simply the diagnosis.
His approach combines pre-operative planning, evidence-based surgical techniques and clear communication, with treatment tailored to each patient's anatomy, recovery goals and lifestyle requirements.
For one person, it may be returning to work. For another, walking without difficulty, climbing stairs, travelling or simply regaining independence.
Understanding these priorities is an important part of determining the appropriate treatment.
Dr. Sanyal's approach places the patient's individual circumstances at the centre of clinical decision-making, with clear communication throughout the treatment process.
Dr. Sanyal's professional development has remained focused on advancing his knowledge and practice in Arthroplasty and complex orthopaedic care.
His journey reflects a progression from broad orthopaedic training and trauma experience to dedicated sub-specialisation in hip and knee replacement surgery.
Today, his practice combines that foundation with specialist Arthroplasty training and experience in contemporary surgical techniques.
For patients considering joint replacement, understanding the surgeon's training, experience, and approach is an important part of making an informed decision.
